LEGEND
This portrait was commissioned just before Ada’s marriage to William, Lord King in July 1835 and painted that autumn. Ada was unhappy about Mrs. Carpenter’s insistance on a short hair style, which she thought made her look “like a crop … dog” and showed too much of her ”capacious jaw bone”.
